Preparations for the trademark opposition procedure in Italy are in full swing.
The Italian Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) has announced that they are finalizing the electronic publication process for Italian trademark applications and registrations. This is one of the technical matters to be resolved before opposition procedures can begin, and the Italian PTO are currently putting the final touches to the process for filing the notice of opposition. The notice should be hardcopy, but the ability to file online is currently being evaluated.

The Italian PTO hopes to launch the publication of the official electronic bulletin early in July 2011, which would include publication of the applications filed from May 1st, 2011 onwards which have successfully passed the official examination on absolute grounds.
International trademarks designating Italy published in the WIPO Gazette from July 1st, 2011 onwards would be open to opposition as well, regardless of when they were actually filed.

The opposition procedure was first introduced several years ago. But technical details like electronic publication of the trademarks have been among the major issues that needed to be resolved before it would be possible to file notices of opposition.
This announcement by the Italian PTO makes it clear that all efforts are being made to launch the opposition procedure as soon as possible, in order to finally allow the use of an administrative procedure to resolve trademark disputes in Italy.
