Luca Melley

Patent and trademark attorney
Luca is a member of the patent department, the European patent department, and the litigation department, and is particularly active in the fields of electronics, software and mechanics.

He draws on many years' experience in drafting and filing patent applications and in patent prosecution, and frequently represents clients as a technical expert in national litigation relating to patents, designs and know-how/trade secrets. He is often called on to act as a court-appointed technical expert and he has been involved in foreign and cross-jurisdictional patent litigation, including lawsuits in the USA and Germany.

His activity regularly includes non-infringement and validity opinions, out-of-court matters, oppositions and appeals before the European Patent Office, prior art and freedom-to-operate searches, due diligence, and strategic IP planning both for research-driven companies and for patent and non-patent owners. He also assists clients with drafting licensing, confidentiality and IP agreements.

Luca specializes in electronic engineering, optics, lenses and glasses, telecommunication systems, mobile and optical communications, radio technology, power electronics, semiconductors and memories, circuit breakers, sensors, fuel level sensors, software-related inventions, electric motors and their manufacture, winding apparatuses for electric motors, medical devices, prosthetic aids, powder technology, glass cutting machines, textile technology, security threads and security papers, casting and lamination apparatuses, vending machines, coffee capsule technology and beverage extraction machines, waste treatment and recycling apparatuses, and machine tools.

His clients are multinational corporations, small/medium enterprises, individual inventors, research institutions, universities, technology transfer offices, venture capital firms and angel investors, both foreign and domestic.

Luca graduated from university with a thesis titled "Electrostimulation for the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis".
