Stefan Weisgerber

Stefan is a member of the patent department and specializes in chemistry and life sciences, and is a member of the European patent department and the litigation department.

He is an expert in oppositions and appeals at the European Patent Office and in cross-border, pan-European and international patent litigation, including interferences in the USA. He also advises clients on out-of-court negotiations, supplementary protection certificates and licensing negotiations.

In preparing freedom-to-operate and validity opinions, Stefan draws on many years of legal and scientific experience, particularly in the fields of peptide and protein therapies, including antibodies. He has prosecuted and defended many important patents in the field of prion diseases, AIDS, rheumatoid arthritis and hepatitis C. On some of these cases he worked for Nobel laureate Rolf Zinkernagel.

Stefan assists clients in drafting, filing, prosecuting, maintaining and enforcing patents in Europe and worldwide, in the fields of industrial chemistry, chemistry, pharmaceuticals and plant protection, for example biological markers, diagnostic assays, nutraceuticals and medical devices.

In industrial chemistry, Stefan has acquired experience with catalysis and metallurgy, and also with nanomaterials, batteries and biofuel production. In chemistry, he has expertise in organic chemistry, in particular organic synthesis and polymers. In pharmaceuticals and plant protection, his work mainly centers on small molecules, biological agents, vaccines and combination therapies. In addition to cases relating to active ingredients, he has been involved in second- and third-generation patents for medicine formulations, medicine delivery systems, polymorphs, dosing regimens, and pharmacokinetics.

His clients range from individual inventors to small/medium enterprises and multinationals and also include universities and research institutes, and are domestic, European, and headquartered in the USA, Korea, China and Australia.

Stefan graduated from university with a thesis titled “Synthesis of 2,6-difurylbarbalane and determination of the kinetic parameters of its Cope rearrangement”.

Prior to joining Modiano & Partners Stefan worked in IP both in private practice and in the in-house IP department of a global pharmaceutical corporation, where he specialized in respiratory disease and immunology.
